Rang De Basanti

Finally Rang de Basanti has been watched. Technically quite brilliant. But that is not the point of this post. The point of this post is to express dismay at the lack of anything constructive in the movie.

The problem with the movie is that it plays to the gallery. Yes, I know, understand and admit that there are youngsters who are cynical, disillusioned, system-blamers; but what purpose does it serve to show that a gang of such friends are suddenly infused with a jehadi spirit? To my mind, the comparison between a corrupt government and the British does not work, simply because there are way too many gatekeepers that play the eternal game of checks and balances in the democracy that we are. ... for example, the police raining blows on a peaceful rally is extremely unlikely. Not that they do not happen. They do. But it is more likely to happen on let’s say, a rally of migrant labourers shouting slogans than a rally populated by educated, well-dressed people from south Delhi. The lack of equality is unfortunate but true.

Similarly, the climax - a government by which party, will order commando action on a group of students that too in presence of billions of journalists and their live telecast equipment? What will stop them is not their sensibility but their will to come back to power after the next elections.

But these are mere loopholes in the plot. Major ones, unlike the minor ones where a broadcast in a FM station apparently provokes listeners from around the country to call in.

There are bigger problems with the movie – those of perspective and interpretation. The film crosses over on either sides of reality and creative expression without warning. The scenes that show the friends hanging out, is exactly like how any of us would have experienced... and then suddenly, they transform in to a gang of mindless and impulsive beings masquerading as modern revolutionaries. The change is so seamless and abrupt that it’s not only scary it’s also possibly dangerous.

Dangerous – because this movie validates a concept of media-centric existence that we anyway see all around us. We all take our cues from the media – television, print, internet or SMS. I might seem like defending my profession when I say that the cynicism that the crowd of tv news channels preach with their finger pointing at politics and politicians is not the only thing that a viewing public is supposed to base its perspective on. It’s on one who watches tv to decide when to switch the tv off; when to say Enough! to the overdose of information; or how to separate the chaff from the wheat.

But the noise of the media stays. Which is why the director finds the easy way out in showing the progression of time and events through mic-toting-yelling-their-lungs-out reporters. Or the gang in the movie using it to confess their crime and convey their motive. But trust me, in real life the journey from point A to point B is not necessarily done by grabbing headlines, even if it’s the Big Idea whose time has come!

And which is why the film doesn’t work in the way it could have... in helping realise the necessity of loving for one’s country, caring for it and being proud of it. It basically does nothing beyond suggesting that today’s patriots are a bunch of unthinking, impulsive beings. Which still is okay, so far as it does not prompt people in to committing stupid acts of killing in a botched up attempt to cleanse the system.

Fingers crossed.

Hey deep,
I agree with u on some aspects of the movie!
Though I loved the first part and movie on the whole--was a little dissapointed with the ending!
Personally I dont believe in the way it ended--to me there are always ways of fighting and one cannot resort to violence without even trying other means!
But guess the spirit of the movie was that no matter what--Its upto us to stand up and fight and atleast try to give things a start!

Deep.
Why not look beyond the obvious ?
Agreed that it is wrong to kill n all,
but why not look at the theme. The theme is " Being a Rebel" There are many a ways to be a rebel. Don't u think that being a rebel and doing something ( either right or wrong) is better than not doing anything at all.

hi
i agree vth u in some points..its not very consrtuctive..but dint he make it clear that killing is not their main idea..but to wake up the system! even b4 RDB, they r younsters who thought of joining the politics n the system to make it better.. every one got msgs to their yahoomessengers that a bunch of iitians started a political party...isnt it a change? y shud u take only that point of killing into criteria...
i agree about the abrupt shift from fun to violence..but it can be overlooked...
the line "politics mein join karo..ias bano..."that may be well remembered...not that they turned out rebels n killed!
but music rocks!!isnt it?!

cut n' paste from a news journal?

Well, it was a mainstream Hindi movie...did you really go there expecting logic and realistic cinema? I always keep my expectations of a Hindi film abysmally low...thereby managing to be pleasantly susrprised most of the time. With this one I was more than just pleasantly susrprised because it actually made me stop and think...I could actually draw parallels between whatever they were trying to say in the movie (through unrealistic illogical activities) and what I have grown up hearing. Also...it had Aamir Khan in it *swoons* how bad can it get *swoons again*

PS: Maybe "Stud' here could explain what he / she means. Im sure two people can think alike, but I dont remember reading the exact same words in any news journals...which journal are you referring to Stud?

I have not seen the movie yet..woe is me!
But I have heard from everyone about a little disappointment somewhere towards the end..they all felt it was incomplete in some way.
oh and I am here via dewaker's blog

hi deep! thanx for visiting my blog. i haven't seen the movie yet to comment on this. happy blogging. cheers.

hey deep,
though a major loop hole in my commenting on the movie would be the fact that i havent seen it myself .but the very reason behind it is that i disagree with it rather strongly and your idea of it "lacking anything constructive" is exactly what my disagreements are directed towards. i believe the worst form any of cinema is the un-intelligent kind, and RDB is even more guilty as it tries to hind under the veils of an intelligent one ... when you stamp a movie with a tag line that says "a generation awakens" you cant pssibily be meaning that they are awakening to what a mess india is or to the fact exteremism is the way out.yes, rakesh mehra very intelligently uses the radio broadcast as a tool to talk to the audience directly and tell them whatever we have been doing for the later half of the movie is wrong , we are sorry and getting that jehadi element of his chest but then getting them killed by the evil power in charge turns them into martyrs . martyrs who you sob for, feel pity for ,and the system who you hate , despise and loath ....
it is catastrophic if a country has a population that sees red at the sight of the parliament.and all it can think of is how to bring it down ..

me being a teen too, personaly feel that yes the youth needs to be awakened ,jolted, slapped out of this world of black and white where there only exist the rulers and the ones being ruled upon.the way to make the system work more efficiently is not to force it into it but be a part of the solution as well . take things in your hands is what the movie begins with but ends with the same old blame game .
the youth needs to be awakened to many more things that run more deeper, like how the househelp's kid cant go to school because he needs to do the cleaning for the house next to yours , how the women panchayat members are really not involved in the functioning , their husbands do the work and how every year the scheduled castes quota in colledges goes 90% empty every year.

Nice page... bhalo design apply korechhish. Keep seeing u in TV and my mom is sayin off late you are looking quite smart....

Tor Mumbai number ta dish

Hey i just happened to hit upon your blog by chance...quite impressed to see the RDB dissection.Watched the movie thrice already. whew!Good blog.

i agree..the movie is pointless...i agree its misleading..i agree it has a million loopholes..but hey deep its a hindi movie...if i dont find drama and action and songs..i wont get my tickets worth now would i?

Hi,
I can't believe you expect so much out of a Hindi movie. No matter what you write, watching the movie in so much detail and than writing about it only proves that you like the movie. Anyway, this review is primarily meant for hindi movie critics (or in other words hindi movie hater) to read. It's so unfair to compare a Hindi movie with say, Hollywood movie. I think a good movie review should give the positives of the movie too. You can't say rang de basanti has no positives like a Mithun starrer.

Found your blog today and I think I like your blog.

@ ekta – Absolutely! Even I loved the first part of the movie…which is why the way it ended disappointed me… something that held great promise seemed to end with a whimper.

@ ajay – Hello Ajay, welcome to my blog. As far as doing something, anything, being better than doing nothing is concerned… I would like to differ with you there… ‘coz often, a step taken in haste and impulsively, often proves to be retrograde. I’m sure when you talk about change, you talk about positive change. Trust me, I’m all for positive change, too. And that is why the movie worries me.

@ J-O-S-H (My Bench !) – The music does rock… and I loved the way the songs were placed… I mean, who would have thought a song like Luka Chhipi could be played at a funeral… or the way Aye Saala was played when they wait at the radio station… As for the killing is not the main idea…somehow, to me it seemed that the message was lost in the noise and the jingoism.

@stud – Hello Stud, welcome to my blog. You actually find my piece news-journal worthy? Gosh, thanks! First time anyone’s told me that! You see anything else you fancy?

@ ron – I know what you mean by expectation, Ron, but you know na, I end up dissecting movies on their aspects… and yes, I should have remembered.. the Aamir Khan aspect… how could I forget *slaps forehead and rolls eyes upwards*

@ maya cassis – Hello Maya, welcome. I do hope you liked my blog. You know I’m glad most people found it incomplete in some way… because that means they are not entirely convinced by the jingoism in the movie. Which is a very very relieving sign.

@ silica – Hi Silika, thanks for coming back. It’s alright even if you have not seen the movie, you can still keep visiting, and comment as and when you feel like.

@bohosyncratic – Can I tell you something? I’m extremely impressed by your clarity of thought and focus… hardly stuff that most teenagers would be aware of and deduce… not underestimating the faculties of teenagers, just that people usually take slightly longer to organize themselves. Really, very impressed. Welcome to my blog. Would like it if you kept re-visiting.

@cyberoam – Thanks. Phone number er jonye amake ekta mail kor, ami tor id te amar number ta pathiye debo…

@ cheshire cat – Hey cheshire cat, thanks for coming over... do visit again.

@ chinks in the armour – Absolutely... a movie has to have drama and action and songs... none of which I have a problem with in RDB... was just a little concerned about the confusing message it might have sent out, that’s all :-)

@ imphaldiary –Well you see, some of us guys who were made to sit through cinema studies classes in college end up dissecting movies they see. Having said that, what I wrote was not a review. I’m not qualified to write a review... all that I’d written were just my thoughts. Nowhere in the post have I said I disliked the movie, in fact the first line says that it is technically quite brilliant. Also, where did I compare it with a Hollywood movie? To my mind, it is often unfair to compare a Hollywood movie with an Indian one, as the latter is so much more colourful, vibrant, dramatic, entertaining, etc etc...As for a Mithun starrer... there’s little as entertaining as that... how can you underestimate his queer dance steps to amazing Bappi Lahiri music?

Welcome to my blog... hope you will come back again.

whatever be the general opinion about the film...i feel it was a creative attempt to bring out the agitator from our oppressed citizens...and you just look around the papers...u will find whther they have been successful or no...

u seem to be a fast track man...and after reading ur post and u..i feel u r competent enough to help the character on crossraods

do take a read -

Hello,
Rang De Basanti was a bit exaggerated and impractical,i guess. But it did influence the youth to a large extent.(We noticed it during the Jessica Lal case and now we witness the same regarding the reservation protests)
To be honest,I don't think I can watch this movie more than once.

Hello,

When I saw that movie, I felt I saw 2 movies. The first part is great, frienship, love, differences, emotions...and then the second part...I felt like I was watching a complete different movie. The fun bunch goes wacko!!! I was like...what the hell!!! It went for the overdose of everything I fight against. I got a little tought for Gandhi right there.

its already the end of june! busy?no posts...

.

"Who is this who darkens
counsel by words without
knowledge? Now prepare
yourself like a man; I will
question you, and you shall
answer Me.

"Where were you when I
laid the foundations of the
earth? Tell Me, if you
have understanding. Who
determined its measurements?

Surely you know! Or who
stretched the line upon it?
To what were its foundations
fastened? Or who laid its
cornerstone, When the
morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God
shouted for joy? "Or who
shut in the sea with doors,
When it burst forth and
issued from the womb;
When I made the clouds
its garment, And thick
darkness its swaddling
band; When I fixed My
limit for it, And set bars
and doors; When I said,
'This far you may come,
but no farther, And here
your proud waves must stop!'

"Have you commanded the
morning since your days began,
And caused the dawn to know
its place, That it might take hold
of the ends of the earth, And
the wicked be shaken out of it?
It takes on form like clay under
a seal, And stands out like a
garment. From the wicked
their light is withheld, And
the upraised arm is broken.

"Have you entered the springs
of the sea? Or have you walked
in search of the depths? Have
the gates of death been
revealed to you? Or have
you seen the doors of the
shadow of death? Have
you comprehended the
breadth of the earth?

Tell Me, if you know all this.

"Where is the way to the
dwelling of light? And
darkness, where is its
place, That you may
take it to its territory,
That you may know
the paths to its home?

Do you know it,
because you were
born then, Or because
the number of your days
is great? "Have you
entered the treasury
of snow, Or have you
seen the treasury of hail,
Which I have reserved
for the time of trouble,
For the day of battle
and war? By what way
is light diffused, Or
the east wind scattered
over the earth?

"Who has divided
a channel for the
overflowing water,
Or a path for the
thunderbolt, To
cause it to rain
on a land where
there is no one,
A wilderness in
which there is no
man; To satisfy
the desolate waste,
And cause to spring
forth the growth of
tender grass?

Has the rain a
father? Or who
has begotten the
drops of dew?

From whose
womb comes
the ice? And the
frost of heaven,
who gives it birth?

The waters harden
like stone, And the
surface of the deep
is frozen. "Can you
bind the cluster of the
Pleiades, Or loose the
belt of Orion? Can you
bring out Mazzaroth in
its season? Or can you
guide the Great Bear
with its cubs? Do you
know the ordinances of
the heavens? Can you
set their dominion over
the earth? "Can you lift
up your voice to the clouds,
That an abundance of water
may cover you? Can you
send out lightnings, that they
may go, And say to you,
'Here we are!'? Who
has put wisdom in the mind?

Or who has given understanding
to the heart?

Who can number the clouds
by wisdom? Or who can pour
out the bottles of heaven,
When the dust hardens in
clumps, And the clods cling
together?

"Can you hunt the prey for
the lion, Or satisfy the appetite
of the young lions, When they
crouch in their dens, Or lurk
in their lairs to lie in wait?

Who provides food for
the raven, When its young
ones cry to God, And
wander about for lack
of food?
